2. Kate's Stars Quilt.
My lovely neighbor Kate wanted to make another quilt like this one and could not find the pattern. I drafted one in EQ8. It was fun and easy. She was delighted to have the pattern and has already made many of the stars. Now the only problem is that I want to make one too!!

He has a fancy set of stones for sharpening knives and scissors.

There are two sets of ceramic stones and various other parts in the set.

He asked me to make a case for the set and I had no idea how to make it.

After numerous attempts and prototypes this is the finished case.

So happy to have this project finished, it feels great.
The quilt has now been deconstructed and I am going to deconstruct some of the arms so I can put them together better.
Apparently when I sewed them together originally I was in a hurry and just put the units together without much care.
QST progress (quarter square triangles or hourglass units)

After discovering the units I made with triangulations measured 3 3/8 inches and were not square, I started over using my AccuQuilt cutter.

Even with accuquilt you cannot sew from the tip of the blunt cut. The unit will measure 3 3/8 not 3 1/2. It has to do with the elusive scant quarter inch seam.

Now that I have figured that out it's onward and upward.

I have been organizing in my studio and came upon this stack of blocks for a quilt. I have no idea when I started it but I think it was going to be a quick charity quilt. That was years ago.

The good thing about a large studio is that you can stash/store lots of things. The bad thing about a large studio is that you can stash/store lots of things.

The fabrics are from Connecting threads and have been in my stash -- no wait, my curated fabric collection-- for years.

While I was deconstructing Mom's birthday quilt I decided to tackle these blocks also.

It is a drop in the bucket in studio organizing but I will be plugging away at it this year and sharing progress here.
Happy 2018 everyone. It is hard to believe that we are already into the second week of this new year.
It is always wonderful to greet a new year, full of possibilities!!
New projects to start and old projects to finish.

Mom's birthday quilt is out of hibernation again!! Firstly it needed a good pressing, so that part was easy.

Mom's quilt was started in September of 2012 and has been in and out of hibernation numerous times. It took many months to piece all of the units but it certainly should have been finished years ago.

We just don't know what to do with it. The center is an eight pointed star that is paper pieced with all batik fabrics. I saw this star in a book and decided to make it into a quilt. That was the setup for the challenge right there. I have successfully designed lots of quilts over the years but none have been this challenging.

So when we have hit design impasses it has been put away and then it has been "out of sight and out of mind". However, this is the time to finish this quilt and enjoy the satisfaction that will come with completion of this quilt. No more hibernation!!
We got 6 of the 8 squares and triangles all ready to applique and decided we did not like it!! We decided the star should be the star. So I took all of the applique shapes off the setting squares and triangles and sewed them back to the star. Then I added the two borders below.

We decided that we did not like the two borders because it made the quilt too big for the bed. So I removed both borders from the quilt and then from each other.

Next week I will bring the star top, the piano key border and some background fabric over to Mom's and we will try and come up with the ideal borders. This is the year we will succeed and will prevail.

More updates to follow. I can't wait to see this quilt finished and on Mom's bed. We will both be doing the happy dance when it's all done.
Life has had challenges since I last posted but things are good and life is good too.
Last year I donated 50 hats for cancer warriors and had planned to make 50 hats again this year. So finally I have started.

The patterns For Giving e-book are wonderful and always keep the hats fun. It's more of a formula than a pattern. It can be purchased on Ravelry.

You can find me as Mommabee on Ravelry.

There are options for the brim body and the decrease section at the crown.

It is easy to do a hat in a day, so there is hope for me to achieve my goal!!!

I'm experimenting to find a good size needle for the yarn. Since these patterns are meant to be extra warm many of the options use two strands of yarn.

The stitch on the body of the hats is called thermal stitch and it's warmer than just stockinette stitch.

Here are the first three. They are all adult size and the last two are an XL size.

This quilt was made for my cousin Laurie Anne, who lives in Northern Wisconsin. She is indeed the Northwoods Diva. In the quilting I put her name and Northwoods diva.
When is enough enough? When is a knitting pattern too much hassle? and no fun anyway?

Over the past 4 or 5 days I have had a battle with a particular knitting pattern. It looks pretty and easy. Looks are deceiving.

Apparently at one point I found this pattern exciting enough to set it up on my Ravelry project page.

The chart was not readable, and the directions although clear were not easy.

I decided that I would have to beat this pattern, it would not beat me. So I did finally beat the pattern with the able assistance of DD Jennifer.

But in the end I decided to frog it instead of thinking I needed to complete what I had started. Why not? My yarn, my time, my decision.

It was liberating to just be finished with this and add one less unfinished knitting project to my life.

There are literally hundreds of patterns that will be just as pretty and more importantly FUN!

She completes an amazing number of projects. She always inspires me to step up my creative game.

Recently she posted pictures of an infinity scarf she twisted to make a meobis....from re-purposed yarn, ding, ding, ding. Gina had already knit a shawl from part of the yarn and then Kool Aid dyed more to make the moebis. Since the weather is changing it is time to get the dye pots out and have some fun.

I remembered how much fun it was to re-purpose yarn by raveling sweaters from Good Will. So, since we were already at Good Will I just had to check for sweaters. What a haul!!! I found one cotton and 4 wool sweaters. They look like they are about fingering weight which is my new favorite weight of yarn for knitting. SCORE.

These 66 years young eyes will wait for a bright morning when they are well rested and the fun shall begin.
Each month we donate items to a different cause. In October we are donating to Riverside Hospital in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
There is always a need for preemie items so the items you see pictured are on their way to warm some little ones in Virginia.

Usually knitting is my chosen craft but occasionally I will get on a crocheting kick and it's fun. These are the result of such a kick!!
These quilts are going to Nevada where there is a reception honoring Viet Nam Veterans. Since Greg my brother was a Viet Nam Veteran Mom and I decided to participate and send these quilts in his memory. Greg was a wonderful man and he is sorely missed.

Mom and I chose the fabrics and I cut the strips to her specifications. Then she designed the quilt top, pieced the strips and added borders. I quilted and bound them.

We have several more tops pieced and will be sending them to a Veterans Administration hospital in the future. There are a number of new VA hospitals opening in 2013. Their goal is to have a quilt on the bed when a Veteran is admitted. The quilt is a gift and is theirs to keep.

These quilts are one way to show our appreciation for our armed forces who serve and have served our nation.

Daughter Jennifer and I are working on a BOM (block of the month) quilt together. BOM is a program where you are sent only part of the quilt pattern and fabric each month. Usually the program lasts a year. This is such a program. But as with most BOM programs the quilt when finished will not be big enough for a queen let alone a king size bed, so we need to make more blocks.

We have been mulling this over since month one and had not come up with any ideas for addtional blocks.

By a happy chance, I mixed up an orientation of a set of motifs in one of the blocks and came up with an alternate block. We decided to make alternate blocks using the same motifs but a different arrangement.

We decided this was a good solution because the quilt would still have the same percent of color as in the original and none of the new blocks should stand out and look different than the original blocks.

These are my blocks. In rows 2 and 3 you can see the reorientation of part of the motifs in each block. I like the differences and will be happy to see how the other blocks evolve.

A shout out to my Bestie in food and fiber, Deb. Deb is a baker -- a wonderful baker (and cook too), quilter, knitter, crafter, singer, actress....the list goes on and on.

We get together every Tuesday morning. We talk and share new ideas with each other. We are excited and giddy by the time the morning is over, at potential new projects and recipes. We both love "new and shiny" ideas.

Years ago I baked lots of bread and even ground my own flours from whole grains. I loved it. It took too much time so I stopped baking.

Deb told me about the Artisan Breads in 5 minutes a day. She helped me get started with my first loaf, which was a success. We have been enjoying the Artisan breads for the last couple weeks.

I mixed up some pizza dough earlier in the week and Saturday night, we had pizza night. I baked all 6 of pizzas!

We didn't have any pizza meats so all 6 were meatless. We didn't have any prepared pizza sauce so we made it from scratch. It is not likely that I will go back to store bought pizza sauce. We decided to make all 6 so we could experiment with ingredients, baking pans, baking stone and baking times.

We used our normal ingredients -- mushrooms, green olives, sauteed onions and green peppers, and shredded cheeses. The star of the show turned out to be fresh mozzarella balls in and herb olive oil marinade. Oh goodness no more shredded cheeses for us.
We had a workshop Thursday at our weekly quilt meeting. Floy taught us the disappearing 4 patch. It was so much fun.

I decided to use some of my hand dyes fabrics. My daughter and I dyed many fabrics and I haven't really used them. So this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

I think I have decided to stay with 15 blocks and will just add a wide black border and a scrappy binding from the same fabrics as the blocks. Maybe though I will make some more blocks. Hmmm..... that is a decision for another day.

Hoping you have a sunny day to enjoy.
Today I needed a new project to knit. So I decided on a pair of mittens for charity. I am frustrated with my Lazy Katy shawl and finished my easy shawl.

The pattern I chose is very easy. It is a two needle mitten. The hint was to knit both at the same time using a center pull ball of yarn. You knit one mitten from the yarn that comes from the outside of the ball and the other from the yarn that comes out of the inside of the ball. I have knit lots of mittens this way. So no big deal.

While I was with my good friend Deb for our weekly get together, we worked together to untangle the yarn several times. I have spent more time untangling the yarn than it would have taken me to knit the mittens.

Dad always had a huge garden and a green thumb. Mom always had flower gardens and enjoyed fresh flowers all summer. The arrangements were varied and many. She had dozens of different types of flowers in her yard.

Keith and I are not yard or garden folk. This year we decided to have some tomato plants. We bought them late in the season but have been enjoying many delicious tomatoes over the past couple of weeks.

Last night we had a mozzarella and tomato salad. The mozzarella balls are from Costco. They live in a yummy herbed olive oil marinade. One of our favorite salads in New York was this one. The cheese was cold and so good. Yay for porch tomatoes.
